Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has confirmed that the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) will have Automated Rail Transit (ART) system in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN). The construction of ART, as stated by Budi Karya, will be carried out in collaboration with China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRRC), a Chinese company also involved in the Whoosh project, the high-speed train connecting Jakarta and Bandung.
“InshaAllah (God willing), the Autonomous Rail Transit (ART) will be built in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) in the West Axis and East Axis regions,” said Budi Karya Sumadi in an Instagram post @budikaryas, quoted on Thursday (25/1/2024).
He added that the construction of the ART route will be conducted in two phases, with coordination involving the IKN Authority and the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (Kementerian PUPR). According to Budi Karya, this trackless train operates using batteries, substituted with road markings and magnets. The ART has a total capacity of 324 passengers with an operational speed of 40 km/h and a maximum speed of 70 km/h.
Budi Karya stated that this autonomous train consists of one trainset with three carriages, accommodating 300 passengers. The ART, built without using conventional tracks but rather virtual tracks, is intended to become a reliable mode of transportation, and efforts are being made to make it a transport option for the future in major cities in Indonesia.
With this project, Budi Karya revealed that Indonesia will be the first country outside of China to possess ART.
The Minister of Transportation has inspected the construction site for this advanced train. He also emphasized that this project can be replicated in other major cities in Indonesia.
