Indonesia’s Railway Industry Keeps Expanding
Continuing on the 2030 National Railway Master Plan (RIPNAS 2030), Indonesia targets to expand the railway network to reach the length of 10,524 km, including urban railway of 3,755 km by 2030. The upcoming railway projects towards 2030 will include Java, Madura & Bali (± 5,590 km), Sumatera (± 2,900 km), Kalimantan (± 1,200 km), Sulawesi (± 734 km), and Papua (± 100 km).
To achieve the 2030 targets, Indonesia initiates several programs including the increase of passenger mode share from 4% to 9% and passenger rolling stocks of over 2,800 locomotives and 34,000 cars. The freight mode share also will be increased from 1.1% to 13%, alongside the rolling stocks of over 2,400 locomotives and 28,000 wagons.
With massive railway projects ahead of Indonesia, RIPNAS projected Indonesia requires financing of IDR 853 trillion or approximately USD 54.3 billion, with national budget amounting for 32% of the total financing needed.
Currently, several railway projects are undergoing development in Indonesia, including Jakarta MRT Phase 3, MRT Phase 4, LRT Jakarta, LRT Bali, Greater Surabaya Commuter Line and others. Jakarta-Surabaya High Speed Train may also be developed following the success of Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Train. In 2030, Indonesia targets railway to be the backbone of intercity and urban mass transport in the country.
